Classical Garden with a Contemporary Twist Barnet Brief: To modernise a tired quintessential English 50s garden into an area that reflected the clients newly created contemporary home. Client’s Wish List: To design a vista reminiscent of the colonial spreads that the client had grown up in with generous spaces for entertaining, covered BBQS and pavilions. Solution: Formality without effort seemed the way forward. So firstly a large formal lawn stretching from the verandah was the immediate requirement, along with spacious, softly curving paths leading to and around the garden. I then designed the water feature to provide an exotic touch. We gave the pavilion areas a classic modern feel. Planting: Large architectural trees and bold foliage shrubs and deep beds to encourage lush growth.
