Sculptor’s Garden, Primrose Hill

Brief: To transform neat but dull backyard into a beautiful outdoor setting for the client’s sculptures. The whole to be in contemporary style to complement the sculptures.

Client Wish List: Area for dining. A smooth transition from the house to the studio. Easy maintenance but with stylish planting and most importantly the garden to look as good from the studio, where the sculptor works as from the house.

Solution: New fencing was vital and by removing the lawn and laying a lovely pale paving, from house to studio, the area was immediately refreshed. In order to focus on the sculptures and planting, I organised the beds to be off centre creating a small interesting journey from the house to the studio. I replaced the ugly storage cupboard on the patio and designed a chic bench which allowed for storage as well.

Planting: Lots of grasses to sway alongside the statues and soften the paving. Calamagrostis, Stipa gigantea and lessingiana, and complementary plants such as Allium, Nepeta, Salvia, Saponaria, Gaura and Lamium.
