Urban Courtyard, West Hampstead

Brief: To transform a mundane back lawn into a stylish modernist outdoor area, which would harmonise with the office/garden room.

Client Wish List: A comfortable dining area, easy maintenance but plenty of flowers that would suit the style. Something to hide the neighbouring houses.

Solution: Slate paving rather than lawn with some geometric beds to allow for planting seemed a stylish way to proceed. Grey concrete walls enhanced the look and separated the plot into enticing little moments of pleasure,
as well as making a contemporary feature of the stairs to the living room. We also used the grey wall idea to custom build the bench. And the finishing touch was of course the pleached Fagus sylvatica.

Planting: Erigeron daisy to soften the paving along with Geranium ‘Lilac Ice’, Lythrum, Verbena bonariensis, Penstemon, Hydrangea Anabel, Small tree, Sorbus aria ‘Lutescens’
Grasses Calamagrostis brachytricha, ‘Karl Foerster’, Molina and Hakonechloa,
